  2. I've never been to Japan, and although I've travelled around China and South Korea, I've never seen anything like that shrine. What do the lanterns signify?

    The Traveller, the lanterns don't signify anything deep and meaninful I'm afraid. They're put up during festivals and the names on the lanterns are the sponsors. Not unlike the ads around a football field.
