Six Weird Things

I've been tagged by bookfool so here are Six Weird Things About Me.

1. Eating raw onion gives me a headache. I also can't eat much garlic as my stomach rebels. This is all rather unfortunate and it just generally makes eating out an adventure sometimes.

2. I can't sleep if my feet are cold, and they always seem to be cold. So I often wear socks to bed, even in the summer.

3. I'm pretty really anal about my books. I never write in them. I never fold over the corners. They usually still look brand new after I've read them. Needless to say, I'm not a big fan of libraries and used bookstores because you just never know where those books have been. I've even been known to not buy a new book if it's the only copy and it's battered up. Every time we move, I'll let the movers pack the dishes and furniture and stuff, but I pack my books in advance so they don't get all bent up. I have gotten a bit more relaxed lately..a bit.

4. I love bookmarks and when I start a new book I like to match a bookmark to the book, by colour, or theme, for example.

5. I sometimes take on the mood of characters in books. Not so great if they're lonely or depressed. Also try explaining: I'm not mad at YOU. And it's not PMS. The character in the book I'm reading is having an argument with another character and...

6. (a) I usually dream about mundane daily events, such as having a conversation with someone. In the morning I'm often slightly confused as to which conversations or happenings were real.

(b) I occasionally have deja-vu from dreams. Not in a dramatic way, but in a gentle 'this is familiar' way. It used to happen quite a bit, then for a few years, nothing. Recently I've felt it again a few times. Whenever it happens it always makes me feel like my life is on track.

I'm behind on my blog-reading so I'm not sure who has already done this one. If you haven't and you're in the mood to share, please consider yourself tagged.

  1. I too love bookmarks. They don't always match the theme of the book though whatever I choose as a bookmark usually matches the season, or the mood I'm in or something. I collect postcards and have some sets of trading cards that have sci-fi/fantasy art, old black and white Avengers pictures, etc. that I often use as bookmarks.

I am really anal about my books as well. I have a select few people I will loan books to and I usually remove and store the dust jacket when I do. Any book I have bought new still looks new today. I have very gently packaged my books up for moves as well. I have sent multiple book orders back to Amazon this year because of dents, dings, etc. Really pisses me off when they send damaged merchandise or don't pack it well enough to keep it from being damaged. I don't mind libraries or used book stores if I'm looking for either an antique looking book or if its an old paperback favorite that is hard to find.

  2. I match my bookmarks to my books too! I have box filled with bookmarks. Love them.

  3. I share your OCD-like attitude towards books. I get some weird stares sometimes at the bookstore when I examine all available copies, looking for the one in the most pristine condition. Have you read Anne Fadiman's 'Ex Libris'? I'm a proud 'courtly lover' of books. :)

  4. Hi! I'm totally anal about books, too, although I will buy used books (and in fact do, in very large quantities).

How/where do you keep your bookmarks? I'm always losing mine, I have them floating all over the house.

  5. Carl, the first thing I do when I get an Amazon order is check out the condition of the books! At least they're good about returns.

    Iliana, yay! Someone else. :)

Lesley, my husband always laughs at me (in a kind way) when I do that at a bookstore. I haven't read Ex Libris, although I've had it on my wishlist for a while.

Cath, nice to see you! Like Iliana (above) I keep my bookmarks in a box. Course I'm even anal about the bookmarks and there are the 'good' ones which I rarely use so they don't get worn, and the 'everyday' ones! geesh!

  6. Wow, I can relate to you on so many items, particularly: cold feet=can't sleep, NEAT BOOKS A NECESSITY, and deja-vu from dreams. That's a weird feeling isn't it? Bellezza

  7. Bellezza, weird but comforting in an odd way, for me anyway. I love it when I dream something and wonder why would I be there, or why it that (something) there, it isn't there now? Then when I get to that point days or weeks later, it makes sense!

I have a little wheat pillow that you heat up in the microwave. Makes my feet nice and toasty. :)

  8. I like to box up my own books, too. I have a collection of bookmarks, but they don't always match the theme of my book. Good idea, though...I think I have a dog bookmark and I'm now reading Marley and Me.
Are you an English teacher? I am too, except in South Korea.

  9. Hi Bybee, yup, I'm an English teacher. This time around I'm mainly doing private tutoring, and just a couple of small group lessons. Last time though I was teaching Business English at companies all over Tokyo. It was so busy it's nice to have a less demanding schedule now.
