The Shipping News: The Movie

I'd been waiting until I'd read the book so I finally watched the movie of The Shipping News. While there were lots of changes and things left out, as usual, I thought it really did capture the spirit of the book and many of the quirky characters and main events were still in it. The fact that they filmed it in Newfoundland was great for the authentic scenery shots. Kevin Spacey isn't anything like what I pictured Quoyle to be like based on the descriptions in the book even though I knew he played him in the movie. I love Kevin and Judi though so I quite enjoyed it. Not a bad way to spend a couple of hours.

  2. Les,
She's great, isn't she? Did I ever mention that I was lucky and got to see her and Maggie Smith perform live in a play in London? Very cool!
Kevin's definitely one of my favourite actors too.

  3. I didn't know Judi Dench was in this movie! I need to check it out now then :)

I actually did like the book - not that I can remember much about it anyway as it's been so long since I read it.

  4. Iliana,
She plays the aunt, if you can remember.

  5. I loved Judi Dench - she is one of my favorite actors. The scenes that are set in New York were actually filmed in Halifax, Nova Scotia - I recognized them from when I used to live there. It was a very accurate portrayal of Newfoundland, I thought.

  6. Lesley,
Fun! Thanks for the extra info and the insider thumbs up. In the DVD extras there were some still landscape shots that were spectacular!
