Sunday Salon: heavy reading

Not much to report this week. As predicted, I found myself ordering a few books from The Book Depository this week but I'll mention those when they arrive.
Otherwise, I'm still reading Black Rain by Masuji Ibuse. It's going rather slowly, a combination of being too tired at night to read more than a handful of pages, and the subject matter being heavy and not one to rush through. It's very readable, don't get me wrong, but hardly a happy story. I did spend a little time this afternoon reading it and I'm making progress but I'm also starting to eye the other books on my 'hope to read soon' pile. So I may pick up something else to take a break from reading about the aftermath of the bombing of Hiroshima for a little while. I'm wavering between a mystery or something for the Once Upon a Time Challenge. As I write that I think I'm leaning more toward escaping into something a bit fantastical for a while. I think I need a break from reality.

This weekend has also been rather uneventful. The weather hasn't been very nice so we just stayed home and I've been doing some housekeeping. Both the real kind and the computer kind. You may or may not have noticed that I've changed my banner again. H complained that the previous one was a bit on the large size plus it felt like time for something new again. Let me know what you think. On that note, I think it's time for me to go choose a book and get ready for bed. Happy reading!

  1. You are like me - I change my header whenever I'm bored with it (which is fairly often)! This one is a keeper though - it looks great!

  2. I think fantasy is a good way to escape after reading something heavy--or even as a break.

I like the new banner, Tanabata! I hope you have a good week.

  4. Stephanie- Yup, I often get tired of my header and want to change it. I am pleased with how this one turned out though. Thanks!

Literary Feline- Thanks. I actually ended up continuing with 'Black Rain'. I guess just being on the computer for a while gave me a break from it. I'm actually nearing the end now so may just finish it before starting something else but I still want to read something fun after it.

    J. Kaye Oldner- Thank you! :)

  5. I am finishing TATTOOED GIRL and haven't decided what to pck-up next to read, I'd like something that grabs me and pulls me in but then you never know until you are well into the novel....:)

  6. I always love your new banners. I'm still on the old "classic" blogger template, and thus haven't taken the time to figure out how to change mine. I can do all my sidebar stuff fairly easily now - feels pretty neat to have learned some HTML over the years - but the few times I've tried to switch my banner, it was a disaster. In any event, I continue to enjoy all of yours! This new one is so pretty. I love the simplicity of it.

  7. For some reason pics are slow to upload for me so I can't see your banner. I'll check back later but I'm sure it's pretty :)
My husband ordered some books last night and I told him he better save some room in that box for my books. So, I treated myself to some books too. Can't wait to hear what you got!

  8. Madeleine- I finished 'Black Rain' last night and I've decided to pick up a YA fantasy next for the Once Upon a Time Challenge. That's what I'm in the mood for right now. :)

Les- Thank you! H helped me set up the parameters (for size mainly) the first time but now I can change the banners on my own. It is pretty neat to have learned some HTML. I just joined flickr finally and adjusted the HTML for posting to my blog so that was satisfying. :)

Iliana- Sorry it's loading slow for you. I hope you can see it later. I'm always frustrated when my computer runs slowly. Luckily it's better again now that H worked on it. As for the books, one of them was the third Maisie Dobbs book but I'll save the rest for later. ;)
Looking forward to hearing what you got as well.
