Weekly Geeks #7: Photo Edition

This week's theme is to post photos, preferably bookish ones, so I decided to give you..
"The Top Shelf"
On the top shelf of one of my bookcases, I keep the books that have been signed by the authors. When we lived in England I had the chance to attend a few book signings and the books in the picture above are all personalized by authors I met in person. Of course I'm always a bit in awe of them so I never know what to say but it was fun to see the writers behind the books. Not shown, a few other signed books that I randomly found at bookshops in London or elsewhere.
Some of the highlights from my small collection..
From the pen of David Mitchell, a self image (?) of him drinking a bottle of Kirin, a Japanese beer. I mentioned to him that I'd also lived in Japan. :)
Some more spontaneous art from the pens of Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean. The above in a copy of The Wolves in the Walls, which I got to hear Neil read aloud!
I never had the opportunity to meet her, but I found this signed copy in a bookstore in Victoria where she had obviously done a signing after the release of Unless.

Some other Weekly Geeks photos that you should check out if you haven't already...
I love Nymeth's homage to stuffonmycat.com!
Maree shared pictures of some of her cats and books.
Harry's "Photosession with stimulants" produced some fun, gothic pictures.
Chris shares some of the books around her house.
brideofthebookgod shows us her comfy reading chair. I want one!
katrina gives us a picture journal of where her reading has taken her this week.
Terri has a clever way to keep those TBR books from being too tempting.
Katherine shows us her tidy, alphabetized bookshelves. I can only dream!

  5. I am very jealous - and impressed - with your David Mitchell autographed "cloud Atlas!" :)

The most fun autographed copy of a book I have is Julie Orringer's "How to Breathe Underwater" -- she drew a fish with bubbles coming out of its mouth along with a personalized sentiment.

  6. Thanks for the super duper mention and I have to say that your photos are quite extraordinary. You got Neil Gaiman to sign you his book. Excuse me but this is just so cool!!!!

  7. Terri B.- If I remember correctly the wolf was drawn by Dave McKean, and Neil drew the rat in 'Coraline'. :)

Nymeth- When 'The Wolves in the Walls' came out Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean had a joint signing in London. Neil read the book aloud and they were interviewed by Jonathan Ross so it was pretty cool.
I tried to watch out for the upcoming signings at the various bookstores and did manage to get to some of them. The perk of living in or near London. :)

Stephanie- It was one of the nice things about living in England. I sure miss the bookshops! :)

SmallWorld Reads- Thanks. I wasn't sure what bookish photos to post.

Teresa- Meeting David Mitchell was my best 'meet the author' experience. He's such a nice guy!
I'm rather jealous of your autographed copy of 'How to Breathe Underwater'! :)

daydream- You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed these. :)

  11. I was disappointed to find out that an author of a book I recently read had a book signing in town on the first of this month--and I didn't know! I could kick myself. Oh well.

  12. Bellezza- Thanks. Today I kind of felt I was taking the same kind of picture over and over, but I think I'm learning a bit as I go along. :)

Maree- Hearing his read the story aloud was great. Marian Keyes was really nice. :)

Andi- That's very cool though that you have something signed by Joyce Carol Oates!

Literary Feline- I was so disappointed when I found out that Sarah Waters was going to be in Cambridge just shortly after we moved back to Japan. :(
