mushroom season

One of the many things that I love about autumn in Japan is the fact that mushrooms are in season. And in Japan you have so many to choose from (shiitake, matsutake, enoki, eringi, maitake, etc...). Sure you can buy many of them year round nowadays, but there are lots of mushroom dishes on seasonal menus right now.

After eating lots of cold food over the summer, it's also the season to start eating hot soups, noodles, hotpots, and so on. So this is what I had for lunch on Saturday, hot kinoko (mushroom) soba.

  5. I love sautee mushrooms in butter...yummmm. Nice to have such a variety, here I can find these mushrooms but mostly dried, I have to soak them in water. Nothing like fresh :}

  7. I wasn't able to see the photos in my other post, a quirk. This looks awfully yummy and the presentation Of japanese food is so nice to look at, here the French do a good job to....I have a craving for little tarts with chesnut (it looks like chesnut noodles) and whipped cream, ever had some in France? Chesnuts are no big thing in the US, luckily I live next to an Italian restaurant and every fall they order the largest chesnuts from Italy.....I digressed lol, I am going international here....:P

    Glad tho hear we share some of the same memories about France :}}}}

  8. Oh, dear! I'd be a horrible Japanese person! I can't abide mushrooms. In fact, the food is one of the things I often suspect is the only part I don't love about the Japanese lifestyle. Well, maybe their religion differences, too. But, everything else I love!

  12. Thanks Weekend Snapshotters for stopping by! :)

    Heather- LOL. Sorry!

    Wendy- It's actually cooled down a bit here, at nights especially. It's so nice to want to eat soup again. :)

    Madeleine- Mushrooms sauteed in butter are very good too. :)
    For the tarts, do you mean Mont Blanc? I find them a bit too sweet, but my husband adores them. There's lots of chestnut stuff here, introduced from France originally I think because they call it by the French name, marron.

    Bellezza- I don't love all Japanese food but I do like a lot of it. You can find restaurants of all kinds of international foods, in the big cities at least, I'm sure you could find something to eat here. :P

    Bunny- Mushrooms feature often in stuff I make in autumn and winter. :)

    BooksPlease- It was! :)

    Janet- It was! I had some soup a couple of weeks ago but this was my first hot soba of the season. :)

    Nancy- I didn't really either until I came here, where there are just so many different kinds to choose from.
