Earthquake update

Sendai Earthquake 2011

Thank you to everyone who has sent well wishes. I realised that although I'd been tweeting and had posted on Facebook after the quake, not everyone perhaps follows me there so I should post an update here as well. I can tell you that we definitely felt the earthquake here in Tokyo. It was the biggest one I've ever felt in all my years here in Japan. Our apartment shook quite dramatically for what seemed a very long time. The cats were awoken from their nap and were rather unsure exactly what was going on. But otherwise we're fine. We're far enough away from the epicenter, and far enough inland that there was very little damage in our area. You'll be glad to know also that my bookshelves survived intact. H joked that it's because they are so jammed full and heavy they couldn't fall down, but it was something to see them swaying.

All the trains in Tokyo stopped running after the earthquake (although some did start up again in the late evening) so H had to walk home from work, which takes about an hour on foot. Many of the millions of people who commute to Tokyo though were stranded and unable to go home. So we were lucky. We especially felt so after watching the images on TV and online of all the devastation caused by the tsunami further north. We'd been glued to the TV for hours but finally had to turn it off a little while ago. So very sad. Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected.

  1. I'm so glad you're okay, Nat. As soon as I heard about the earthquake, I started paging through FB to see if you'd posted and it was a huge relief to see your comment. Ear rubs to the kitty boys.

  2. It's been hard to concentrate on work this morning with all the news coming in - the images are unreal. So glad to hear you are okay. I live in an area that's long overdue for a huge quake, so events like this hit extra close to home, knowing that it could very likely happen to us at any moment.

  3. I'm glad to know you are okay, and your books too of course. :)

Strange how blogging and tweeting makes world events so much more real to me....Chances are I'll know someone wherever the tragedy has struck!

  5. So glad you're fine. It's a big thing and I'm sure there will be a long aftermath of this that probably will affect you in some way.

It's so sad how many people did get affected by it and how many were killed. It's strange to think how this can just happen from one moment to the next without any warning.

  6. So glad you posted this, Nat, as I don't do Facebook or Twitter. I was able to get a text to and from my son via his cell phone -- he's fine, just doesn't have power.
