After the success of the first one earlier this year, Judith at Leeswammes' Blog has organised another Literary Giveaway Blog Hop. As I'm trying to pass on a few of the books I've read but know I won't read again, before moving next year, it's perfect timing.
For this giveaway event I have 4 books to share with you. All of them have been read once by me but still look almost like new. The only exception is The Age of Longing which I bought used in the first place, so it's a little scuffed and faded, but still a nice copy.
The River by Tricia Wastvedt (trade paperback)
Longlisted for the Orange Prize, 2005
When two children drown [Not a spoiler- this is the opening scene] on an idyllic summer afternoon in 1958, the community of Cameldip is left haunted by the tragic loss. And parents Isabel and Robert suffer a grief that is as devastating as it is unrelenting.
Thirty years later, Anna arrives in Cameldip, fleeing city life and her own disappointments. She does not tell anyone that she is pregnant. Anna goes to live with Isabel and unwittingly begins to unravel ties of guilt and betrayal held close for many years. When the baby arrives, powerful feelings of loss and heartbreak begin to surface and Anna is forced to ask whether Isabel’s feelings towards the baby are entirely benign.
The Age of Longing by Richard B. Wright
(trade paperback, used)
Shortlisted for the Giller Prize and Finalist for the Governor General's Literary Award, 1995.
Set in small-town Ontario and spanning three generations, Richard B. Wright's acclaimed novel of Howard Wheeler's search for self-understanding is a journey through the past, both real and imagined, a brilliant gathering-together of the many threads of emotional inheritance that make up a life.
The Fall of Light by Niall Williams
(large paperback, Book Club edition)
The men of the Foley family have always been proud and fearless, fashioned by the harsh, cold elements of their country, and by years of fighting tooth and nail for survival. Their story begins in Ireland, in the difficult years of the early nineteenth century.
The family have lost their home and suffered another loss which proves even more vital – beautiful Emer Foley, wife of Francis, mother to Tomas, Finbar, Finan and the youngest boy, Teige. With nothing to hold them they move on, setting out across Ireland to its western shore, searching for the untenanted land that is to be their new Eden. But Francis Foley is a bitter man, and his flinty soul can only bring destruction. Inevitably the five Foleys are scattered, each to his own road and his own future.
The Story of Lucy Gault by William Trevor (hardback)
Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, 2002
Captain Gault had seen off the three intruders easily enough. They had come in the night with the intention of firing the house, but a single shot had sent them scuttling back into the darkness. One, though, had been wounded and for that the Gaults were not forgiven: sooner or later there would be trouble again. Other big-house families had been driven out – the Morells from Clashmore, the Gouvernets, the Priors, the Swifts. It was time to go too.
But Lucy, soon to be nine, the only child of the household, could not bear the thought of leaving Lahardane. Her world was the old house itself, the woods of the glen, the farm animals, the walk along the seashore to school. All of that she loved and as the day of departure grew closer she determined that this exile should not take place. But chance changed everything, bringing about a calamity so terrible that it might have been a punishment, so vicious that it blighted the lives of all the Gaults for many years to come.
